Dessert Ideas for Church Events, Fellowship Meals and Potlucks

Church events bring a lot of people to one table: Sunday fellowship meals, potlucks, homecomings, pastor anniversaries, youth nights and holiday programs. The best church event desserts are easy to serve to a crowd, simple to hand out without a lot of cutting, and friendly to every age in the room. In this guide we share the treats from our menu that work well for church gatherings, how much to order, and a few tips for serving safely in a fellowship hall.
What Desserts Work Best for Church Events?
Single-serve desserts work best for church events. Cupcakes, cake pops, dipped pretzels and Rice Krispy treats can be set out on trays so people serve themselves without knives, plates for slicing or a long line.
A sheet cake looks simple, but somebody has to cut it, plate it and clean up after it, usually the same few volunteers who already set up the tables. Individual treats take that job away.
- Easy to serve: cupcakes, cake pops, cakesicles, dipped pretzels and popcorn bags.
- Good for all ages: mild flavors such as white, chocolate, strawberry and yellow cupcakes suit both children and grandparents.
Party Packages for Fellowship Meals
A party package is the simplest way to cover dessert for a fellowship meal. Each one bundles several treats in matching colors.
| Package | What is inside | Listed price |
|---|---|---|
| Variety Party Package (36) | 6 each of cake pops, cupcakes, pretzels, small apples, Rice Krispy treats and popcorn bags, color coordinated | $100 |
| #2 Variety Package (42) | 12 cupcakes, 12 dipped strawberries, 6 dipped pretzels, 6 dipped Rice Krispy treats and 6 dipped Oreos | $108 |
| Deluxe Package (48) | 12 each of cake pops, dipped strawberries, dipped pretzels and dipped Rice Krispy treats in your colors | $125 |
| The Ultimate Package (36) | 6 large dipped apples, 12 dipped strawberries, 6 Rice Krispy treats and 12 dipped pretzels | $142 |
Themed versions of these packages decorate the treats to match your event, such as a church anniversary, a women's day program or a youth lock-in, and they cost more than color matching. Prices are the listed starting prices and are confirmed when your order is accepted. You can compare every option on our party packages page.
Cupcakes by the Dozen for Potlucks and Dinners
Cupcakes are the easiest dessert to bring to a church potluck. They travel well in a box, they need no cutting, and a few flavors on one table give everyone a choice.
A potluck works best when each family brings something different, so cupcakes are a nice way to cover dessert while others bring the casseroles and sides. Our standard sized cupcakes come by the half dozen, starting at $10, in white, chocolate, lemon, red velvet, strawberry and yellow with a choice of icings. For something a little more special, standard sized specialty cupcakes such as banana pudding stuffed start at $15 per half dozen.

Fruit Displays and Trays for a Lighter Option
A fruit tray or fruit display gives guests a lighter choice next to the sweets, and it is the one item on our menu that can be delivered. That makes it a helpful option for a large church dinner.
A fruit tray is listed at $50 and suits a Sunday school class, a deacons' meeting or a small fellowship. For a bigger crowd, a fruit display is planned around your guest count, with options for 30, 50, 75 or 100 people, starting at $75. You can buy the fruit yourself, or we can shop for it for a $15 fee plus the cost of the fruit. Display equipment needs a refundable deposit, and delivery outside of Hope has a fee of $20 or 60 cents per mile round trip.
Read our fruit display guide to choose between a display, a tray and a watermelon bowl.
Dessert Ideas by Church Occasion
Different church events call for slightly different desserts. Match the treat to how long people will stay and how formal the program is.
Sunday fellowship meals and potlucks
Cupcakes by the dozen and a fruit tray. Keep it simple and easy to set out right after service.
Homecoming and church anniversaries
A themed party package in the church colors, with cake pops or cakesicles for a polished look. A monogram or number box showing the anniversary year makes a nice centerpiece.
Pastor and first lady appreciation
A cupcake bouquet in a box, which comes with a card and envelope, works as a gift from the congregation, while a party package covers the reception.
Youth nights and vacation Bible school
Kid-friendly treats like candied popcorn bags, dipped Rice Krispy treats and dipped Oreos. They are easy to hand out at the end of the night.
Repast meals after a funeral
Simple cupcakes and a fruit tray are a gentle, practical choice. If you are helping a grieving family, tell us your pickup timing and we will do our best to help within our schedule.
How Much to Order for a Church Crowd
Plan about one to two dessert pieces per person. Use one per person when other families are bringing desserts, and two when yours is the only dessert on the table.
For a fellowship meal of 50 people where dessert is shared, four dozen cupcakes or a 48-count package is usually enough. If you are the only dessert, plan closer to 100 pieces, such as two packages, or a package plus several dozen cupcakes. Our guide on how many cupcakes you need for a party walks through the math in more detail.
| Guests | Dessert is shared | Yours is the only dessert |
|---|---|---|
| 25 | 2 dozen cupcakes | A 48-count package |
| 50 | 4 dozen cupcakes or a 48-count package | About 100 pieces |
| 100 | About 100 pieces | About 150–200 pieces plus a fruit display |
Planning Timeline and Pickup
Order at least a week ahead for church events. Same-week orders close at 5 pm on Tuesday, and your order is secured once the deposit of half the total is paid.
Pickup is in Hope on Thursday and Friday from 4:30 to 8:30 pm and Saturday from 11 am to 2 pm. We are closed Sunday through Wednesday, so for a Sunday fellowship meal plan to pick up on Saturday and keep perishable treats in the refrigerator overnight. For midweek services, pick up the Friday or Saturday before. Our guide on how to store cupcakes explains what goes in the fridge and what can stay on the counter.
Payment can be made by debit or credit card, PayPal, Cash App or cash.
Serving Safely in the Fellowship Hall
Keep cold treats cold and do not leave perishable desserts on the table for more than two hours. Label anything with nuts so guests can choose safely.
The West Virginia University Extension buffet safety guide advises keeping cold food at 40°F or colder and discarding food that has sat at room temperature for two hours. That matters for dipped strawberries, cheesecake fillings and cream cheese icing. Bring out half the treats at first and keep the rest in the church refrigerator.
Allergy note: some of our items contain peanuts, such as Reese's cupcakes, and some contain tree nuts, such as pecans on turtle cupcakes. Tell us about allergies when you order and put small labels on the table. Learn more about food allergies. For members watching their sugar, sugar-free cupcakes are on the menu; see our sugar-free treats guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you decorate treats for a church anniversary?
Yes. Coatings, drizzles and sprinkles can match your church colors, and themed packages can carry an anniversary theme. Share the colors, the year and any wording during your free consultation. Themed work costs more than color matching, and the final price is confirmed when your order is accepted.
Can you deliver to the church?
Fruit displays can be delivered, with a fee outside of Hope. Cupcakes, packages and other treats are pickup only in Hope on Thursday, Friday or Saturday. For a Sunday event, pick up on Saturday between 11 am and 2 pm and refrigerate anything with fruit or cream cheese.
What is the easiest dessert for a large church potluck?
Cupcakes by the dozen are the easiest. They need no cutting, travel in a box and suit every age. Add a fruit tray for a lighter option, or choose a 36 or 48-count party package if you want several kinds of treats in matching colors without planning each one.
Our bakery's motto is "A Cup of Faith," and we are glad to be part of the gatherings that bring Hope's church families together. Browse all of our treats, then place your order through the order form or send us a message on Facebook to plan your next fellowship meal.
