Dogs are family, so it makes sense that more people celebrate their dog's birthday or "gotcha day," the anniversary of the day they came home. A small party with a dog-friendly treat is a fun way to mark it. At Strixly Cupcakes we make PupCakes, cupcakes made for dogs, sold by the half dozen. This guide explains what PupCakes are, the safety rules every dog owner should know about people treats, and how to plan a simple, happy dog party.

What Are PupCakes?

PupCakes are cupcakes made for dogs. Ours contain no sugar and are topped with a peanut butter and cream cheese icing, and they are sold by the half dozen.

They look like a party treat, so they are great for photos, but they are meant for your dog rather than your human guests. If you would like cupcakes for the people at the party too, order a half dozen of our standard cupcakes and keep the two boxes clearly separate.

If your dog has allergies, a sensitive stomach or a special diet, ask us about the ingredients before you order, including the peanut butter used in the icing.

Why Dogs Should Not Eat People Cupcakes

Many people treats contain ingredients that can make dogs sick, so do not share regular cupcakes, chocolate or sugar-free sweets with your dog. Two ingredients matter most.

  • Chocolate: the ASPCA warns that chocolate contains methylxanthines, which can cause vomiting, diarrhea, hyperactivity, abnormal heart rhythm, tremors, seizures and even death in pets. Darker chocolate, baking chocolate and cocoa powder are the most dangerous. (ASPCA)
  • Xylitol: the U.S. Food and Drug Administration warns that this sugar substitute can cause a sharp, sometimes life-threatening drop in a dog's blood sugar, starting within 10 to 60 minutes. It can be found in sugar-free gum, baked goods, sugar-free desserts and some nut butters. (FDA)

That is why "sugar-free" does not automatically mean "dog-safe." If you think your dog has eaten chocolate or xylitol, the FDA advises calling your veterinarian, an emergency clinic or an animal poison control center right away.

How Many PupCakes Should Your Dog Have?

A PupCake is a treat, not a meal. One PupCake for a small or medium dog, or a portion of one, is plenty for a celebration, and you can save the rest for later in the week.

  • Follow your veterinarian's advice, especially if your dog is overweight, diabetic or on a special diet.
  • If your dog has never had this kind of treat, start with a small piece to see how their stomach handles it.
  • For very small dogs, cut a PupCake into halves or quarters.
  • Reduce regular treats that day to balance things out.

A half dozen works well for one dog over several days, or for a small party of dog friends with one PupCake each.

Planning a Simple Dog Birthday Party

The best dog parties are short, small and calm. Keep the guest list to a few dogs who already get along, and plan around your dog's comfort rather than a big crowd.

  1. Pick a familiar place. A fenced backyard or your living room keeps nervous dogs relaxed.
  2. Invite a few dog friends. Ask owners to keep leashes handy and to tell you about any allergies or food rules.
  3. Set out water. Excited dogs get thirsty, especially outdoors in Arkansas heat.
  4. Serve PupCakes one at a time. Give each dog their treat in a separate spot to avoid squabbles over food.
  5. Plan the photo. Many owners take a quick "birthday portrait" with the PupCake before it disappears.
  6. Keep people treats out of reach. Put human cupcakes, chocolate and candy on a high table.

Party Ideas for the Humans

If people are coming to celebrate too, add a few human treats that are easy to keep away from curious noses. Individually wrapped or boxed treats work best around dogs.

Remember that cookies and creme treats and chocolate-dipped treats contain chocolate, so keep them well away from the dogs and pick up any dropped pieces quickly.

Gotcha Day, Adoption Days and Other Reasons to Celebrate

You do not need a birthday to celebrate your dog. Many families mark the day their dog came home, a puppy's first year, a training milestone or a senior dog's next birthday.

PupCakes also make a thoughtful gift for a friend who just adopted a dog, a neighbor's new puppy or the dog-loving coworker in your office. Pair a half dozen PupCakes with a card, and tell the recipient to check with their vet about any diet questions.

Ordering PupCakes

PupCakes are sold by the half dozen and made to order. Send us your pickup day and time with your order request; same-week orders close at 5 pm on Tuesday, a deposit of half the total secures your order, and pickups in Hope are on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

When you pick them up, keep them cool and refrigerate any you will not serve that day, since the icing contains cream cheese.

PupCake Questions

Are PupCakes safe for dogs?

PupCakes are made for dogs, contain no sugar and are topped with a peanut butter and cream cheese icing. Every dog is different, so ask us about ingredients if your dog has allergies or a sensitive stomach, give small portions, and follow your veterinarian's advice for special diets.

Can people eat PupCakes?

PupCakes are made and portioned for dogs, so they are not intended as a people dessert. If humans are celebrating too, order regular cupcakes for them and keep the two boxes separate so nobody mixes them up, especially young children helping with the party.

How should I store PupCakes?

Keep PupCakes in the refrigerator because the icing contains cream cheese, and use them within the time we suggest at pickup. Let one sit out for a few minutes before giving it to your dog so it is not too cold, and keep the box out of your dog's reach.
